Last year, BMW presented a prototype for an electric scooter dubbed the “C1,” but never produced it. “Project i” signals a new start, the paper said. Building scooters is new territory for Daimler, though.

The latest developments are an attempt to tap into the growing e-mobility branch, which has most big carmakers working on new electric cars and scooters, the paper said. It will also be a chance for auto companies to reach young customers. While German teenagers can’t get their driver’s licence until they are 18, scooter licences are allowed at just 16.

E is for electric: The BMW C1-E concept scooter

When BMW released their original C1 scooter in 2000 nobody had seen anything like it on the road. And not many C1s were seen on the road after it was released either. In the three years that BMW produced the scooter-with-a-roll-cage, only about 12000 were made. The riding public didn’t quite know what to make of the C1 and BMW never sold as many as it had hoped. Now BMW has brought the urban runabout back as the C1-E concept vehicle with an electric drivetrain. Could it be the C1’s time has come?

MP3 in its sights: Peugeot shows off Concept HYbrid3 Evolution

Peugeot is no stranger to scooters and already has a 3-wheeled scooter to aim at the Piaggio MP3. Since the MP3 has a hybrid version and Peugeot is exploring hybrids in its automobiles, it's not too surprising that Peugeot has revealed the Concept HYbrid3 Evolution. The powertrain uses a 300cc engine good for 41 hp, according to Diario del Motor. This is double what the MP3 produces and uses two electric motors powering the front wheels to account for eight of those hp.

Vectrix lives again, has lithium future

It appears that Vectrix has just about sorted itself out and could soon officially declare itself out of bankruptcy and on the straight and narrow lithium-lined path. According to a press release we found reproduced on the V is for Voltage forum (but could not find on the websites of the companies involved) GoldPeak Batteries has scooped up "New Vectrix" and changed its name to back to its original Vectrix Corporation.

Campus police switch to 'green' scooters

Security officer Charles Taylor patrols the San Antonio College campus on a T3 Motion vehicle. Some on campus have taken to calling him RoboCop.

But that's what some students at San Antonio College like to call him when he glides across campus on his T3 Motion, an electric upright scooter that's popping up on college campuses, malls and grocery stores across the nation. Somewhat akin to the Segway PT, the T3 is designed specifically for law enforcement with a three-wheeled base, storage space, lights, sirens and the ability to turn on a dime.

It's only a prototype at this point, but the XO2 from XOR Motors is designed for urban living, especially for apartment and loft dwellers where parking space is at a premium or non-existent and lugging even bicycle up flights of stairs is a challenge.
